MH New Zealand Limited
- 9 Wilkins Street March 2008 – Present day
- Freemans Bay, 1011
- Auckland
MH NZ are a Pre Press and Design Company, working with major label and packaging companies, translating the designers vision into something the packing suppliers can produce.
The business has a production department based at its Auckland head office with sales and customer service locations in Sydney and Brisbane and a printing plate production facility in East Tamaki.
MH also has a software development team working on their www.VAM.co.nz and www.Labelsforwine.com services.
Current Role: Systems Administrator
At MHNZ I have developed my skills greatly with many systems including, but not limited to, Apple OSX servers and Workstations, Print Rips and ESKO software solutions.
This position has also been an introduction for me to large data storage with three main storage raids two of 10TB in size. I have just completed a hardware refresh and reconfigure of these units to a fully redundant mirror form stripe and raid 5 configurations. Within this hardware refresh I also replaced the system drives on the main windows file server and SBS server to a fully redundant mirror from a striped array. This was done with no production downtime or data loss using Acronis software.
I have also completed a few key projects and migrations which have been focused on moving the network to a position of greater redundancy, security and stability. The network now has true backups and could be recovered in the event of disaster.
While at MH I learnt, managed and configured many things but the most notable for me are:
VMWARE ESXi
MHNZ had a mixture of Virtualisation solutions and physical servers, I have virtualised all of the servers for the VAM and Lablesforwine platform moving the production environment from Sun to a Linux based platform as well, producing a virtualised development and test environment.
Within this platform we have also rolled out a set of three virtualised WS2003 terminal servers for Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland. Offering users across the Tasman access to core network services such as the companies file maker pro based MSI system at a good performance level.
WAN, Firewall and VPN
MHNZ had a mixture of netgear and Cisco routers and windows 2003 servers delivering a very unstable and problematic mixed method solution. I have replaced this with a solution from MAKO networks which was scoped and deployed by myself; this uses a mixture of BDSL broadband in Australia and fibre optic and DSL here in NZ. I also renegotiated contracts on all circuits and reduced network costs and have increased efficiency, control and reporting on services.
Network Documentation
When I arrived at MHNZ there was a one page network document, I have now 90% documented the networks functions and systems with drawings stored in a mediawiki server for easy and searchable reference. This is an achievement I feel very proud of; whoever comes after me has all the information at their fingertips.
I have enjoyed the last year at MH, we have achieved a lot and the team are great to work with, but I feel that as this company goes through tough times financially, with the network now in a solid stable position, I can move on to a new challenge and MH can now manage the network moving forward without a dedicated systems administrator.

Technical Support / Chief Technology Office
Chief Technology Officer
I was originally hired in 2002 by Sulco to move its IT systems forward from a basic system of 3 stand alone windows PC’s and a network of 30 Wyse terminals running a SCO interface to a Sun server to a fully featured network.
This was originally done using an open source platform utilising Linux for mail and file serving requirements and x-windows as a terminal server environment for 25 desktops with the remaining network of 10 computers being windows 2000 fat clients. Back in 2002 this offered a very cost effective solution for the company.
Over the last 4 years the IT infrastructure of Sulco has grown exponentially to the point where we now have 65 computer users, 10 servers, 20 laptops, 25 van star computers and 20 desktops. This growth has involved some reasonably major IT Projects as below:
- Building and deploying Linux Thin client network
- Dynamic website solution using the Cyberglue product.
- Deployment of Goldmine CRM solution
- A bespoke point of sale solution for the 25 mobile tool trucks using an open source solution developed by Asterisk.
- Microsoft Terminal Server network
- SBS MS Exchange file and print server solution
- CRM 3.0 Migration from Goldmine
- Merger of two offices networks to new building and a single network
- Deployment of Avaya Phone System [with IP Office]
- Security Camera Systems
- 3 Different firewall and gateway solutions
I was involved in various stages of all these projects including initial scope and documentation, migration of legacy systems and new solution deployment, user training and support, change management and management of external vendors.
Management of a network of this size on my own is archived using some outsource providers. The outsource providers Sulco use are:
- Gen-I[Asterisk]
- Integral [Quanta]
- Cyberglue
- Origin IT
This support of all hardware and users accounts for about 50% of time. The remainder of my time is spent with technical support of Sulco’s external Customers.
Technical support [wheel service specialist]
This is a part of a role I performed for Sulco when previously employed between 1992 and 1996 when I launched the company into the wheel alignment market place with the FMC product from America, now the JBC product.
Working mainly but not exclusively with products the company sells into the wheel service market place I perform a range of functions, these include: Service and repair of equipment, installation of equipment and user training on use of equipment.
Some of this equipment is quite complex and uses things like optic measuring systems using ccd, Led or laser technology which may interface with Dos, windows or Linux Pc’s.
I also have experience working with both hydraulics and pneumatics, I can weld and use dyna drills and grinders etc, I don’t mind getting my hands dirty when required to get the job done.
Within this function I also do some sales support in terms of assisting clients with new site installation design and demonstration of product for sales presentations.
Within the training sphere I also teach a one day seminar for mechanics on wheel alignment which has been adopted by Bridgestone NZ and Mag & Turbo Warehouse as there preferred wheel alignment training.
Within my role at Sulco I am also expected to travel on a regular basis within New Zealand at very short notice both by Air and road. I have also done several international trips for the company most recently to China to investigate supplier’s factories.
I am in a position where travel is not an issue for me and I am happy to work away from home, I don’t however see it as an advantage in a role, in my experience when I travel for business its all about work.
